Dana Point, CA, June 15, 2015 – Mercury Cable & Energy (“Mercury”), the leading developer of High Voltage Composite Reinforced Conductors (“HVCRC”) for electrical transmission lines, is pleased to announce its international affiliate in conjunction with Hindusthan Urban Infrastructure Limited (HUIL) has been awarded an additional 138 kilometers to complete the 150 kilometer project near the City of Johannesburg, South Africa.
The project is being installed by Edison Power Group, a leading turn-key contractor in Africa. The project re-conductors a key segment of the transmission grid around the City of Johannesburg and the increased ampacity of the HVCRC Conductor provides City Power Johannesburg with a solution for a critical congestion problem in the Johannesburg Grid. This initial 150 kilometer segment is Phase I of a 600 kilometer overall project overseen by Edison Power.
HUIL manufactures HVCRC conductor for the African market under the brand name “HVCRC CONDUCTOR”. HVCRC Conductors are revolutionizing the construction of African Transmission lines providing the best solution to the acute power crisis for South African Power Utilities. The High Ampacity Low Sag HVCRC CONDUCTOR as a replacement of conventional conductors can be strung on the existing towers thereby resolving the difficult Right of Way problem African Utilities face. HVCRC is the ultimate Smart Conductor offering in Africa, providing unmatched efficiency over the conventional ACSR & AAAC Conductors with innumerable advantages for construction of South Africa’s Smart Grid and supporting the concept of a modern more efficient transmission grid.
“We are pleased to participate in this project with Hindustan Urban Infrastructure Limited,” said Ron Morris, CEO of Mercury. “As a leading provider of wire and cable products in Africa, Hindustan is an ideal partner for the implementation of Mercury’s HVCRC products into South Africa.”
Hindusthan Urban Infrastructure Limited is a leading manufacturer of overhead conductors & electro – porcelain high tension insulators. Established in 1959, Hindusthan has received Quality Management System Certification – ISO 9001:2008 & Environment Management System Certification ISO: 14001 : 2004 by BVQI, apart from having the ISI Mark Certification for Over Head Conductors such as AAC, ACSR, AAAC & AACSR up to 800 KV Lines. Hindusthan is also a Member of the Standing Committee for overhead Conductors up to 800 kV of Bureau of Indian Standards, Government of India for the last two decades. Hindustan provides solutions to a diverse set of clients across India & Africa.
Mercury Cable & Energy is a privately held developer of High Voltage Composite Reinforced Conductors (HVCRC), Smart Conductors for the Smart Grid. The patented HVCRC Smart Conductor is superior to existing conductors in a number of key performance areas including:
- Up to double the current carrying capacity of ACSR
- Substantially reduces high temperature sag
- Requires fewer structures for new line construction
- Increases capacity of existing rights of way and structures through retrofitting
- Eliminates bimetallic corrosion
- Significantly reduces line losses compared to same diameter conventional and composite conductors at equal operating temperatures
